Day 8 -- Alaskan Adventure

Today is Monday July 12,2010. We left Fort Nelson, BC and drove 380 miles on the Alaskan Highway to Watson Lake, Yukon. We drove most of the day in the mountains with beautiful rivers and streams running along side the road. The water was such a beautiful turquoise and clear as glass. It rained most of the day and the temperature ranged from 52 to 58 degree, so the taller mountains were all fogged in, which only added to the beauty. We drove about 100 miles and stopped in Frog River at a little restaurant and gift shop and got out to stretch a little and look around. They had ball caps attached to the ceiling from everyplace imaginable so it was a bit unique. We were stopped a few times for construction and the road had areas of gravel but they were not so bad to drive on as long and you slowed down to a reasonable speed. About the time we left Frog River, the exhaust break on the motor home quit working totally which made for some pretty fast trips down the mountain side. Since the exhaust break quit working the engine has not run hot like it was a few days back. So one thing breaks and corrects another I guess, who knows. Then we noticed we have a rock chip in our windshield which is exciting news and about 75 miles before we reached Watson Lake, the windshield wipers quit working. Did I happen to mention it rained all day??? So now when we are running down the side of the mountain without our exhaust break, we will have no fear because we will not be able to see where we are headed!!!! The happiness we have had with our brand new 'rig' is more than I can relay. Larry said more than once today he cannot wait to get it home so he can sell it.That being the case, I should not be advertising how much joy we have had in the 3 or 4 months of our motor home ownership! Tomorrow we are headed to Whitehorse as they have a truck service that works on Freightliner motor homes. Of course how many days we will have to stay in Whitehorse before they can complete our list of repairs is yet to be determined. I am just happy we have not had any tire issues as we talked to a guy last night that had 3 blowouts since he left home so he was off this morning to buy another tire. We did have a great day of wildlife viewing as we saw 2 deer, a heard of at least 30 buffalo wondering across the road which gave us no choice but to stop and let them decide when they were ready to make way for us to drive on. There were several baby's in the group and they were all having their fill of the grass and vegation along the side of the roadway. As we drove on we saw 3 moose at different locations, 3 black bears, 3 more buffalo, Larry said he saw a fox, and about a million big huge ravens or crows or whatever they are. Some of them are the size of a wild turkey!
When we got to our campsite we took the car off the dolly and drove baeck into Watson River to pick up a few grocery items. I'm certainly glad it was just a few as the prices were out of sight! We bought a half pound of ham for$5, half pound carton of cottage for $4.49 and a very smal bag of corn curls for $3.99. So with bread our bill was $22.34. Since it was getting pretty late we decided to go across the street to a little cafe to eat. When we got inside it was a ma and pa place where you place your own order up front, pick it up in a Styrofoam box and eat at a folding table. We ordered 2 hamburgers, fries and a bottle of soda each. Our bill for that was $22.The hamburger was not as tasty as a McDonald's and the fries were --fries. Back to the kitchen for me!
We are beginning to have shorter nights of sleep as we are far enough north now that even at 10:30 or 11:00pm the sky is still light. It makes you feel like it's earlier in the evening than it is so therefore the time gets late before we hit the bed. The mornings are light very early so we are awake at 5 or 5:30am. I read in one of the booklets we picked up today that in Whitehorse in July there are 19 hours of daylight. So speaking for myself, it is starting to catch up with me and each day around 1:30, I need a nap. It's almost like I'm retired.
The cats are getting very bored with the traveling as we have not had many nice areas to let them outside for a change of scenery. Tucker, who staked out his spot riding 'shotgun' on the ledge by the passenger seat, has even become bored with that position today and just hopped down and disappeared back in the bedroom or someplace. He has been so obsessed with his spot that he has had to fight off Raven several times. When we are parked for the night, Raven has hopped up on Tucker's ledge and has had a lashing by Tucker a few times. As soon as Tucker eats in the morning he is parked on his ledge waiting to go. These cats are a pain most of the time but they ARE funny. They are like children. at times and you can just imagine what is running through their brain.
