Day 2 of the Alaskan Adventure

Tuesday July 6, 2010. We left Waterloo, IA at 7:05am. The day was beautiful but a little warm. As we neared Chamberlain, SD we could see up ahead of us what looked like a massive storm coming in. We turned on the weather radio and they were calling for heavy rain, high winds, hail and there was a tornado warning issued for the area we were driving. We found a rest stop and pulled in and the storm hit pretty hard. We kept hearing very loud 'pings' on the roof of the motor home and realized it was hailing. The weather channel was calling for golf ball sized hail but thank God, it was not that large just lots of it. We waited out the worst of the storm and headed out driving. We had dodged the worst of the storm but it gives you a little feeling of insecurity when you are in an RV facing a bad storm. All part of the game of travel I guess. We drove to Wall, SD where we pulled in for the night at Sleepy Hollow RV Resort. If you have ever been to Wall, SD, you know that the only thing in town is Wall Drug, which consumes the whole of the main street in town. We had dinner and walked to 'town' for a short visit to the famous Wall Drug. We were here about 25 years ago traveling with our girls. After

walking around Wall Drug for 5 minutes, I can tell you nothing has changed in 25 years. We met up with a couple in the campground that were from Nebraska visiting for the week for their class reunion. They both grew up in Wall, SD. He told us that anyone who needed a job had one waiting at Wall Drug. All the people in the little community were employed at Wall Drug. Anyway we enjoyed a leisurely evening. We traveled approximately 500 miles today. When we fuel up the motor home it brings you to your knees when you see the total bill. We already told our daughter's we were going to spend a large chunk of their inheritance on our trip north. We have been averaging about 9.5 mile per gallon which is less than before but we are pulling a car going up and down the mountain sides so we aren't doing so bad on mileage.
