Day 5 Traveling to Alaska
Today is Friday July 9, 2010. We have now been on the road north for 5 days. We left Great Falls, Mt at 8:15 and crossed the Canadian Border t Coutts Alberta. They asked the usual questions and then told us to park and come inside. At this point I was sure they were going to search the motor home. We went in and they sent us down the line to a young lady who took our passports and told us to have a seat. She did her checking online I assume to see if we had warrants out for our arrest?? She then called us up to the counter and ask her 50 questions and sent us back down to the other end of the room where they took the firearms form Larry had completed for the shotgun he brought along for the bear. They checked it all over, had him sign the form and sent us to another area to pay a $25 fee, I assume for bringing the gun into Canada. After we paid the fee they said we were free to go. What a relief as I have heard stories about them searching RV's and tearing everything apart. We drove on our way and went quite a distance and saw a sign for a rest area so we pulled off and followed the signs which lead us to the other side of RT 2. When we got ready to leave, we realized the road running in front of the rest area was one way which took us south rather than north. We ended up back on RT 2 going the way we had just come from. We ended up turning off RT 2 taking a blacktop road back north and ended up finding our way back onto RT 2 going in the right direction. CRAZY ways they mark the roadways here!!! After coming through Calgary the traffic was terrible in both directions. Everywhere you looked was an RV. It appeared everyone in Canada was heading in our direction and when we tried to find a campsite tonight, everyone was filled so we are parked in the trusty Walmart parking lot in Edmonton, Alberta. Shortly after we pulled into the Walmart a terrific storm hit and the wind was terrible. The rain was coming down in sheets and the sky looked horrible. The storms always concern me more when I setting in a tin box! The storm passed and since I have limited sources tonight for cooking we ate at Tim Horton's. For years when we traveled on the motorcycles, we used to love eating at Tim's. Well either my tastes has matured or they have dropped considerably in their quality because tonight just didn't get it for either of us. Anyway all is well and we are headed for Dawson Creek tomorrow.
