Tok RV Park 11:00pm sun still shinning--------Bakery/Restrurant we stopped for coffee
_______________________________________________________________________
Today was the big trip through the wicked road to Tok. I drove the first 100 miles or more and, yes, the roads were bad. Most of the time we could not drive more than 30-40 mph because the road was just too unpredictable. They had huge dips and sink holes that had to be dodged so there was no reason to try getting the spead up. The good thing was that there was hardly any traffic so I could take one side or the other of the road to avoid the bad areas. We stopped at a little restrurant in the middle of nowhere for coffee and a homeade cinnamon roll which was wonderful. They sure were drawing a crowd as by the time we left, the lot was so full of RV's I could hardly angle my way out to the highway. They must make good money at the place because it was the only place for miles. We paid almost $7 each for a very small coffee and a medium size roll. Everything is expensive here so it's a matter of whether you want it or not.
We crossed the US Border without a concern and on the US side the road got really bad for awhile as it was down to the dirt for several miles. At least on the other section in the Yukon, the bad spots were gravel. I think we drove more than 20 miles toward Tok before the roads started getting better. When we arrived at the Tok RV Park everything was covered in dust. They have a very nice RV wash here at the campground. Before we parked at our campsite, we drove the motor home over and got in line to wash both the motor home and my car. The wash jobs were not perfect but they sure look better than when we arrived. I was going to cook dinner tonight but a couple pulled in next to us and she told me they had a very nice restrurant just down the highway so we decided to give it a try. The name of the restrurant was 'Fat Eddys' and the food was great. We were going to have just a pizza and salad bar but our waitress told us we really should try the fried Halibut. We both ordered the Halibut and a salad. Larry had fish batter french fries and they were different and both the Halibut and fries were very good and worth the price. We then drove on into Tok a short distance and stopped at a gift shop where I saw a sign about windshield repair. We asked the clerk at the gift shop and she said the guy would come out to the RV and repair it and that he would do it right away if we wanted. We decided to have her call him to fix the windshield, which he did, but we are not so sure the job he did was that good. It cost us $60 and at least maybe it will prevent the windshield from continuing to crack.
The Winnebago Carravan was following us today and, of course, they are all staying here in the campground again with us tonight. They seem to be nice people as we talked to a couple of them both last night and today. I would guess there are about 16 RV's in the group, maybe a few more. I think the idea is that they travel pretty much at their own pace and just have a place and time each night to meet up again.
The campground here in Tok is very nice. It is really big and clean with lots of tall pines everywhere. We have been pretty lucky so far on our campsites each night. We have had a few pretty bad looking places but that is to be expected I guess, when all the little towns are so remote. They had live entertainment tonight here in the park but by the time the glass guy finished it had already started so we did not go.
The weather was beautiful today when we left Destruction Bay and later it clouded over. By the time we drove into Tok this afternoon the sun was shinning bright again and very warm. It is after 9:00pm and it is still 74 degrees and of course the sun is still shinning bright. I could never get use to going to bed with the sun shinning each night. Of course I assume in the winter all you would want to do is sleep since they have so few hours of daylight.
Tomorrow we are off to Anchorage to stay at least Sunday and Monday night. Depending on when they finish with the motor home repairs at Freightliner, will be when we take off from there. I guess we will go ahead to Fairbanks and come back to Anchorage when Leslie and Pete fly in, which is July 31. I imagine by the time they leave for home we will be making our way back down toward our route home as well.
