Wednesday July 14, 2010. We spent a very laid back day today as we needed a little down time. Drove downtown this morning and shopped a little. There do not seem to be that many local shops in the downtown area. The shops that are
there are very expensive --big surprise! Didn't find anything I could not live without so just spent a leisurely morning walking and browsing. We ended up at Walmart and picked up a few grocery items and came back to campground. The car is covered with dirt inside and out! The engine area is covered with dirt from pulling behind the motor home. They have an RV wash here in park so Larry first cleaned the engine off and took the car over and washed it It was so bad we could hardly see out the windows when we went downtown this morning. Of course I was tired so I hit the bed for a much needed nap this afternoon. Larry's cousins Gary and Kathy told us we must eat at the Klondike Rib and Salmon BBQ, so tonight we went back downtown and had dinner there. It is really an unique place--kinda reminds you of an old mining building. The food was excellent! Larry had Halibut and I had Salmon. Both were very good but the most unusual item included in the meal was bannock bread, It was rather unusual so I looked it up on Internet and found it is an authentic Native Cree bread. They also referred to it as Indian fry bread but I have had fry bread in Arizona and this was nothing like fry bread. Anyway it was tasty and different.
We went back to Walmart tonight to get rainx for our windshield in hopes it will help driving on Friday since we do not have our wipers fixed yet. While there we counted almost 60 RV's parked in the Walmart parking lot for the night. It was like a campers city!
Tomorrow we are driving to Skagway, Alaska just for the day since it is only 95 miles from Whitehorse. We will return here to stay another night in the Hi Country RV Park. On Friday we are headed to Tok, Alaska, will spend the night there and drive on to Anchorage on Saturday. We have an appointment at Freightliner in Anchorage on Monday to replace the windshield wiper motor and to take a look at the brake issues we have been having. We will probably drive north farther after they work on motor home and then return back to Anchorage around July 30 because Leslie and Pete are flying into Anchorage on July 31 to stay a week with us.
It rained off and on all day. The weather changes more rapidly here than in Peoria IL. The sky can be very dark with heavy clouds and 5 minutes later the sun is out. Or if it rains it seems to be a light rain and does not last long. As I mentioned before, the nights are just very strange and still very light at 11 or 12:00 at night. Last night I tried to take a picture at 11:00pm but not sure that it shows just what it really looks like at that hour. All the daylight hours really has our sleep pattern in a mess!
